OPTIONAL EXTRAS
This gravel cycling journey through Catalonia links rural inland landscapes with the Mediterranean, offering a varied and well-balanced experience for riders who value diversity, culture, and carefully chosen routes. From the quiet countryside of Serinyà to the historic streets of Girona, the tour unfolds across some of the region’s most distinctive environments.
The opening rides explore the agricultural heart of the Empordà, where flexible loop options around Lake Banyoles allow you to tailor each day’s distance and elevation. Quiet secondary roads, open farmland, and gentle inland climbs create an ideal setting to settle into the rhythm of the journey.
As the route continues east, medieval towns such as Castelló d’Empúries introduce cultural depth before the landscape opens toward the coast.
A defining highlight is the approach to Cadaqués, reached via a demanding inland climb and rewarded with a descent into one of the Mediterranean’s most iconic coastal towns. The following stage contrasts rugged terrain with open horizons, crossing the wetlands of the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park.
Further south, the tour turns inland again, climbing through the forested hills of Les Gavarres, a remote massif shaped by sustained efforts and low-traffic roads. The journey then transitions toward Girona, where historic railway corridors now form part of the Vies Verdes network, linking rolling countryside with the city.
These well-used gravel paths underline Girona’s long-standing connection to off-road riding and its position within Europe’s most established gravel cycling regions.
Designed for riders comfortable on smooth and well-maintained gravel terrain, this self-guided tour features moderate daily distances and medium elevation gain across consecutive stages. GPS navigation and luggage transfers support a focused riding experience through Catalonia, where terrain defines the challenge.
Top Places You’ll See
From natural wonders to authentic local culture, the route is packed with memorable sights—these are our absolute favorites.

Girona
Girona is a charming city rich in history, culture, and medieval architecture. Its old town features narrow cobblestone streets, colorful houses along the Onyar River, and the well-preserved Jewish Quarter, one of Europe’s most beautiful. Highlights include Girona Cathedral, ancient city walls offering panoramic views, and vibrant plazas filled with cafés and local life. With a perfect mix of history, culture, and charm, Girona captivates every visitor.

Aiguamolls de l’Empordà
The Aiguamolls de l’Empordà is one of Catalonia’s most significant wetland areas and a protected natural park. The route crosses the park on flat gravel paths, offering wide horizons and a quiet riding experience shaped by water channels, open fields, and birdlife. This section provides a distinctive change of pace between coastal terrain and inland hills.

Lake Banyoles
Lake Banyoles is Catalonia’s largest natural lake and the focal point of the opening gravel loops. The area combines lakeside paths, open farmland, and gently rolling terrain, with a network of quiet roads and gravel tracks frequently used by local cyclists. Its calm atmosphere and rural surroundings make it an ideal introduction to the inland landscapes of the Empordà.

Castelló d’Empúries
Castelló d’Empúries is a well-preserved medieval town on the Empordà plain, once an important political and religious centre of the region. Its Gothic cathedral and historic core stand out against the surrounding flat landscapes. Passing near the town adds cultural depth to the stage toward the coast, contrasting rural gravel riding with centuries-old architecture.

Vies Verdes
The Vies Verdes are former railway lines converted into smooth, well-maintained gravel paths that form part of the approach to Girona. These gentle corridors are widely used by cyclists and connect rural landscapes directly with urban areas. Riding sections of the Vies Verdes reflects Girona’s long-standing cycling culture and its reputation as a key gravel hub in the region.

I found this place with a simple Google search, and I never could’ve expected the custom experience I received. They provided options to help my husband and I hone in on exactly what we wanted to do for our honeymoon. We had perfectly curated GPS-lead rides all across the country, they booked all of our hotels, and planned all of our transportation. Every place that we went was so beautiful. I’m so grateful that we found this company to help us plan our honeymoon, couldn’t have asked for a better experience!

I was able to tailor a bike tour itinerary along the Adriatic coast that suited our group during the shoulder season. We added individual pre and post-trip activities which went smoothly. Our trip included stops in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. The trip planner, guide and support team were great.

I would highly recommend anyone doing this tour take the e-bike option. There were only 3 of us on our tour who completed this on regular bikes. Four others who started out on regular bikes swapped over to e-bikes after the first day. The climbs are long and steep. There is pretty much only up or down, not much flat or undulating road. It is doable, but very challenging. If you are on an e-bike then this also helps with the group staying together and no-one having to wait too long for others to catch up. The bikes were really good and had great gearing that was capable of handling the steeper climbs. When we booked we were unaware that we would be riding in a group of 20plus at all time. Thankfully our group had prior group riding experience but we did observe other large groups with less than desirable riding behaviours.Others in our group were extremely understanding and supportive. Our guide, David, was very adamant about staying safe on the road. He was flexible with the itinerary and made changes to suit the weather conditions and to ensure we got in as much riding as possible. He was vey knowledgeable about Croatian history and agriculture and taught us lots about the country he is so passionate about. Our captain, Tolma, was also amazing and along with his awesome crew, made our cruise an enjoyable experience.
